If you do not already have a trust, Black Ankle Munitions can help. Contact us to discuss purchasing a trust. Once you have purchased the trust, it will be emailed to you, and you must then have it notarized. There are numerous advantages of the trust, such as being able to add a spouse, child, or whomever onto the trust so in the event something was to happen to you, they can still legally possess the item.
FAQs
Trusts are great if the goal is for multiple people to be allowed to possess the suppressor. Trusts are also advantageous as they are the easiest method to pass on your NFA items in the event something happens to you.
The biggest disadvantage to using a trust is that all Responsible Parties on the trust must provide fingerprints and photographs for each NFA purchase.
All that said, if you choose to buy your NFA items as an individual, you can still allow others to possess and shoot your suppressor as long as you are in the general area of the suppressor. In the event something happens to you, the item can still be passed on to an heir, the process is just a little more complicated. (We recommend working with your preferred dealer to help you through the process.)
Yes you can, but keep in mind the process to transfer your NFA item to the trust is the same as when you filed as an individual. The tax stamp will have to be paid again, fingerprints and photographs are required again, and if you have your local dealer assist you, any fees they charge will be required.
The only difference is you will already be in possession of the item, so the approval time is generally no longer a concern.
Currently, paper form approvals are coming in around 12 months and eform approvals are around 4 months. These numbers are averages, some forms get held up in the FBI background investigation (adding 4 months or more) and some move through quickly.
No. Whether this is your 1st purchase or your 50th purchase, each transfer is treated equally.
The transfer process to your dealer varies but currently is averaging 5-12 business days. We submit an electronic Form 3 once we receive a copy of your transferring dealer’s FFL/SOT. Approved items are shipped the following business day. Courtesy order status emails are provided during each step of the process.
Nowadays, most transferring dealers will prepare your Form 4 paperwork. In the event your dealer is not setup to handle the transfer for you, for a small fee, we can handle the paperwork.
A lot of NFA dealers are now offering this service at their shop using a digital livescan machine or rolling your prints manually. For the photographs, you can download one of the numerous “ID PHOTO” apps that are available on the device of your choice.
If you are local, we will handle this service in our office for a small fee.
